Reading the data off of a disk. you may have a 30MB connection between your processor and the drive, but you still have to wait for the head to move to the track, and then the data to spin under the head before it can be read and sent on its way to your app.
That neat piece of code that you added way up near the top of your class hierarchy that logs when a class gets instantiated. It only takes 100ms, but it runs for all 500 nodes when a treeview gets populated, and you wonder why the treeview takes about a minute to display.
