For individuals who would like to demonstrate their expertise with a particular Microsoft product, Microsoft offers the Microsoft Certified Professional credential. Microsoft Certified Professionals have demonstrated in-depth knowledge of at least one Microsoft product.
The MCP credential provides a helpful "steppingstone" on the way to Microsoft's other certifications:
Microsoft MCP Site
Microsoft Certified Solution Developer, MCSD Site
Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, MCSE Site
Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer + Internet Site
Microsoft Certified Database Administrator, MCDBA Site
MCP + SiteBuilding Site
MCP + Internet Site
Microsoft Certified Trainer Site
To become an MCP, you must pass one certification exam that provides a valid and reliable measure of technical proficiency and expertise. MCP exams are developed with the input of professionals in the industry and reflect how Microsoft products are used in organizations throughout the world. The exams are administered by independent organizations—Sylvan Prometric and Virtual University Enterprises—at more than 1,400 testing centers around the world.
Please select a Microsoft certification track that you plan to pursue and choose one exam from that track. MCPs are required to pass any one Microsoft certification exam that is current as of October 1, 1998 (a current exam is any that has not been retired). The exceptions are Exam 70-058: Networking Essentials and Exam 70-240: Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Accelerated Exam for MCPs Certified on Microsoft® Windows NT® 4.0. This change in the requirement is retroactive: Any MCP candidate who has passed a current exam as of October 1, 1998, will be certified as an MCP on that date and receive full MCP benefits.

Folks should understand that being a McP is no guarantee of competence, any more than having a driver's license make you competent to race Formula One cars. But as a marketing tool, demonstrating that you have made the effort to become certified can distinguish you from those who have not. -- Ted Roche, Microsoft Certified Solution Developer, Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, Most Valuable Professional
