SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language) is an international standard (ISO 8879: 1986) which was published in 1986. (It is a reliable way to store and access large amounts of data without worrying about proprietary formats. In other words, an SGML document written on Microsoft software can be read using any other company's SGML software.
