In SQL Server 7, Secondary Data Files have .NDF extensions. The secondary files are used if the database is large and the primary data file has reached capacity or data is allocated to multiple secondary files for performance reasons.
You would only see a performance improvement if the secondary files were placed on other physical drives. Having multiple file alone won't do anything. Remember, there is only one set of read/write heads per drive. - Michael Levy
